‘The idea of creating a new breed of women’s magazine arose out of a phone conversation (one of us lives in London, the other in Dorset!). Sidetracking from the matter in hand (a story of some sumptuous and very rich person’s house we were collaborating on), we began to bemoan the current state of women’s magazines. In the course of our bitchfest, we found that our complaints were incredibly similar. Why, when we knew so many amazing, creative and interesting women, were we faced with mainstream magazines that reflected back an image of ourselves obsessed with reality TV stars, negative body imagery (we don’t want to ponder on our cellulite or anyone else’s, thank you very much!) and an alarming new predilection for surgical procedures to ‘enhance’ the way we look?
We decided to do something about it because (to paraphrase the catchphrase of a well-known beauty brand) – WE’RE WORTH MUCH MORE THAN THAT!
Magnificent Me has been founded to celebrate women’s diversity, creativity, wit, intellect and general fabulousness. It’s a place where women of all ages, backgrounds and origins can enjoy each other’s take on life, be inspired by each other’s achievements and hear about some of life’s strange paths and challenges – as well as contribute themselves and help the Magnificent Me (Magnificent Us!) community to grow!
Rather like a baby, the magazine has been taking shape out of the public eye for the past nine months. This is the first of four quarterly issues. We hope that as we grow – with your help – we will be able to bring you great writing, ideas and images even more frequently.
